Elliot Page says he joined his first dating app thanks to one of his ‘Umbrella Academy’ co-stars

Elliot Page is back there, and he’s getting some help from The Umbrella AcademyThis is Ritu Arya. The 35-year-old actor took to his Instagram Story and shared a photo of himself on a bed next to Arya staring at what is presumably Page’s cellphone. He captioned the story, saying, “@rituarya walks me through my first dating app.”

The dating app sign-up page comes about 18 months after it filed for divorce of Emma Portner after three years of marriage. A month before that, Portner publicly shared his support for Pageafter he came out transgender. “So proud of @elliotpage,” Portner wrote on Instagram alongside a screenshot of Page’s statement. “Trans, queer and non-binary people are a gift to this world.”

“I also ask for patience and privacy, but that you join me every day in the fervent support of trans life,” she added. “Elliot’s existence is a gift in itself. Shine on sweet E. I love you so much.”

The Umbrella Academy creator and showrunner Steve Blackman recently shared exclusively with ET how he designed Page’s character transition on the show. To begin with, Blackman said write Viktor’s transition was not made at Page’s request. He said the decision was based on what felt creatively and narratively right.

“I had already finished the season, the writers were gone, the scripts were done, and one day I got a call from Elliot saying, ‘I’m transitioning.’ I was very happy for him,” said Blackman at ET. “To his credit, he didn’t demand that I write it down in history. He said, ‘Do whatever you want. I trust you. Write it, don’t write it, whatever you want to do. Elliot is very nice like that.”

“In the end I decided to write it, but to be honest, I didn’t know much about what it was like to be transgender and I didn’t know how to tell this story,” said he acknowledged. Blackman reached out to Nick Adams, vice president of the GLAAD Media Institute and transgender rights advocate, and transgender author/journalist Thomas Page McBee for advice. “[Thomas has] “I lived the experience and it became my guide,” Blackman said. “Working with Elliot, they explained to me what it means to be trans, what it means, how it feels and how to tell a story.”

When he got the script for the new scenes for the second episode of Season 3, Page said Blackman got it right.

“I just sent the pages to Elliot and I said, ‘What do you think?’ And he said, ‘They are beautiful.’ They had some thoughts and that was it,” Blackman added. “He was so nice to me, he didn’t make any demands about it. He just said, ‘Create the story you want to tell,’ and it was really wonderful. You can’t improve as a as showrunner, as writer, of someone like that.”
