Would you like to be rewarded for doing the things you know you should be doing anyway to take care of yourself, like working out and seeing your doctor?

While the health benefits of doing these things should be reward enough, it sure wouldn’t hurt to have a little extra cash to spend on healthy groceries or an exercise class, would it? not ?

To help you with your wellness efforts, fintech company Ness has now launched the Ness rewards app.

Ness says their new app will eventually allow people to earn points for “healthy actions” they already do, like getting regular checkups and hitting the gym.

Points earned can then be redeemed at their partner wellness brands.

Some of the many well-known brands they work with include Barry’s Bootcamp, Sweetgreen and Thrive Market.

They also acquired WellSet, a holistic wellness virtual course provider. WellSet has a network of 4,000 health coaches, doulas, dietitians, and therapists that you can access using your points.

Additionally, Ness is creating a suite of credit cards to help its customers earn rewards faster.

Future plans include offerings for medical benefits, supplemental insurance and comprehensive health insurance.

Derek Flanzraich, who was previously CEO and founder of grandistwhich was acquired by Health Line Media in 2019, says he started Ness because he was frustrated that his insurer wasn’t paying for therapy visits during the pandemic.

As a result, he became determined to make wellness more accessible and affordable for everyone.

Greatist was created to take care of the accessibility part and now Ness will help reduce wellness costs.

“Ultimately, we see credit cards as the best platform for consumers to get health insurance that will stick with them for 30 to 40 years, not just 3 to 4,” Flanzraich explained.

“When we can justify investing in long-term health now, it will lead to a healthier society with health plan incentives fully aligned for the first time.”

Behnaz BojdPhD, assistant professor at UC Irvine Paul Merage School of Business, said she heard about the Ness app through an Instagram fitness influencer she follows named Megan Roup and thinks it is “a very interesting idea”.

She believes it is very likely to be effective.

“There are research findings that show financial incentives can motivate people to adopt healthy behaviors like going to the gym,” she noted.

She says there may be some downsides, however. For example, people who are not interested in Ness Wellness Partners might have less incentive to use it. Additionally, people who are already happy with their current health insurance might be less inclined to use it.

She suggests that increasing the number of retailers available to redeem points or have a cash back or points donation feature could encourage even more people to use the app.

She thinks that since we are social beings, incentives like the ability to receive likes and share photos can also be good motivational tools.

However, Bojd cautions that while external incentives such as points can be a good way to kick-start your well-being, research indicates that in the long run, people need to have their own internal motivation to stay engaged.

Anamara Ritt OlsonPhD, an associate professor and director of CERES Network Training and Engagement at UC Irvine’s Public Health Program, was a bit more hesitant.

“There are tons of great apps out there, but getting people to use them and keep using them is a huge challenge that few apps succeed at,” she said.

She expressed concern that Ness appears to be designed to increase consumerism rather than behavior change.

“I haven’t seen any data to support that spending money on ‘healthier brands’ actually leads to a healthier lifestyle,” she said. “But, having said that, if it can reduce barriers to a healthier lifestyle, that’s a wonderful goal.”

Ritt-Olson agrees with Bojd that having motivation outside of an app is important to achieving your wellness goals.

“A healthy lifestyle doesn’t depend on any app. They’re just tools. More effective ways to achieve wellness and a healthier lifestyle mean connecting with a trusted medical provider and crafting a plan customized for you and your needs,” she said.

However, she notes that there are some great apps that she personally uses, including MyFitnessPal for tracking activity and food intake, the Calm app for stress reduction, and Open for mind-body workouts.

She also agrees with Bojd that friends can be a good influence on our wellness efforts.

“Texting for a hike or going to the gym gets me out more than any app,” she explained.

With the Supreme Court’s pending opinion to overturn Roe v. Wade, some consumers are rethinking how much of their health data they want to share with mobile apps.

Several period-tracking apps reassured users that companies would not sell or share their contact details. But several types of apps and programs, even Internet searches, generate data such as location tracking — data that could be used to implicate people seeking abortions.

Jessica Lee, partner at law firm Loeb & Loeb, helps companies develop their privacy policies. She says even robust standards can’t do much about user privacy. The following is an edited transcript of our conversation.

Jessica Lee: Well, I mean, the privacy policy, it’s not necessarily an agreement. Rather, it is a notice or disclosure about a company’s privacy practices. So in terms of what the notice can do, it can only tell the consumer what a company is doing, and then the consumer has to decide whether or not they’re comfortable with those practices.

Kimberly Adams: As someone who writes privacy policies for businesses, have you seen any companies, especially tech companies or any of those apps, change their privacy policies in light of this news?

Li: Not yet, but I think those conversations are happening. Companies probably go back to their privacy policies, but I will say that the privacy policy is the last, right? They should first review their practices, understand what they do, who they share information with, what type of information they share, then identify: Are there any updates they need to make to protect their consumers?

Adam: What can an app do, however, if presented with a warrant requiring user data?

Li: This is a difficult question. Because if law enforcement went to court and got a legal warrant to get information, a company could try to challenge that warrant. We have seen other companies do this. Apple, for example, challenged an effort to get a backdoor into its devices. But depending on company size, resources, and a company’s policies, they might not want to challenge a warrant. I think it becomes a more difficult conversation. And consumers really need to understand that there are – even in states or jurisdictions where there are broad privacy protections – there are usually exceptions for the operation of the law.

Adam: And what legal protection is there on the user’s side for this type of data?

Li: Very little. This data does not fall under HIPAA, which is a kind of federal law that protects certain health care information. And unless you’re in a state like California, where you could have [the] right in 2023you will have the right to limit how sensitive health information is used, or in Colorado or Virginia where companies will be required to seek and obtain your consent to collect your health information. But there are no laws on the books in many states that will protect this type of data in the way that I think most expect.

Adam: So how do you anticipate mobile app privacy policies changing in the coming months, if at all?

Li: Part of that will depend on how apps decide to update or change their practices. For example, Apple recently moved to require apps to have a nutrition label which contains more high-level, easy-to-digest information about what an app does. And you might see some of these apps looking to make information about their practices more accessible so that consumers can make a different decision about how they use or interact with that app.

As Jessica pointed out, privacy policies can be tough, but they also need to be accurate.

Last year, fertility tracking app Flo Health reached a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission after the company claimed it did not share user information with third parties like Google and Facebook. Turns out it was.

A new app lets people explore the island’s maritime history (Photograph provided)

New app will take users on a guided tour of the island’s boating heritage as Bermuda gears up for the International Boat Race SailGP.

Race organizers have teamed up with the Bermuda Tourism Authority for May as Heritage Month, with races scheduled for this weekend.

The Seafarers Tour, guided by a smartphone app, is part of the Cedar and Sail program highlighting Bermuda’s long sailing history, leading to innovations such as the Bermuda Rig and Bermuda Sloop.

It will take participants on a tour of historical sites across the island, with guests choosing an eastbound or westbound route.

Departing from the BTA’s Hamilton Visitor Service Center on Front Street, the tour heads to some of the island’s premier sailing clubs.

It includes the story of piloting legend James “Jemmy” Darrell, a slave who won his freedom after a nautical feat in 1795.

Lookouts and other landmarks are featured on the westbound tour of Dockyard.

Family sailing stories passed down over the years can be submitted to the project at www.cedarandsail.bm.

SailGP youth program manager Tom Herbert-Evans said Bermuda “has got to be one of the best sailing venues for SailGP”.

“Looking deeper into the maritime history of the island, it is evident the amount of knowledge and influence that has impacted the design of most modern racing yachts, including our F50s.”

Charles H. Jeffers II, BTA General Manager, said, “SailGP is a top sporting event for the island, even beyond spectacular sailing.

“Their support of our Cedar and Sail initiative shows the power of partnership and the impact tourism initiatives have on our community.”

Mark Clarke, maritime consultant and local SailGP Steering Committee member, said the project marked an exciting opportunity for “our rich maritime history to record and share”.

He said: “The campaign should help dispel myths that minimize the historical footprint of some of our maritime pioneers and shine a light on Bermuda’s diverse nautical heritage.

“I hope this knowledge will continue to instill national pride in our residents and show the world why Bermuda is on the verge of reclaiming its status as the world’s sailing mecca.”

Equator Coffees has collaborated with Design by Kellie Patry to create a cafe inspired by Californian topography and the subway line that runs parallel to the Ivy station location and flows seamlessly into the public green space adjacent to the building. The clean-lined interior is infused with color, futurism and playfulness, and the design ties the interior and patio together with curved white oak benches, offering a subtle homage to subway design. The cafe features details like a Thomas Williams tile mural mimicking ocean waves, and Louis Poulsen pendants light up the dining room. On the design of the new cafe, Patry reflects: “Edge-thinking, Helen and Brooke’s journey along the equator is central to my inspiration. Equator Coffees is a tireless and welcoming company run by equally moving women. I consider coffee as Flapper Chrome turned into Espresso Futurismat a Culver City subway station.

Equator Coffees Culver City location will include Ground control ‘Cyclops’ brewers, allowing Ecuador’s renowned coffees to shine. This state-of-the-art coffee maker creates a layered brew via a multi-extraction, full-immersion brewing process. Inworld AI has released the beta version of Inworld Studio, a platform that allows developers and creators to create AI-powered virtual characters that demonstrate human perception, cognitive abilities, and behaviors.

Launch of Inworld Studio – An experience like no other

Inworld Studio allows creators to create any intelligent virtual character by simply describing the character in natural language. By shaping their character’s brain, creators are able to adapt many elements of cognition and behavior, such as goals and motivations, speech patterns, memories, knowledge, and voice. At the end, the characters are trained and immediately ready to interact.

Photographers have Instagram. Players are streaming on Twitch. Artisans promote their crafts on Pinterest. And TikTok launched the careers of performers in music and theater.

But the authors – arguably the original creators of the creator economy – didn’t have a social media platform designed to help them reach readers, says Allison Trowbridge, founder and CEO of the social media app. Copper Books. Trowbridge, an author herselfaims to fill that void with the app, which just launched this week with the aim of creating an online community connecting writers and their readers.


“Authors are micro-entrepreneurs who spend years of their lives developing a product – this book – which they then have to launch to an audience,” Trowbridge told dot.LA. “There was nothing to really support this process.”

West Hollywood-based Copper, who went live on Apple devices Thursday, allows authors to host live online events like book readings and chat with fans in forum discussions. Readers can discover books and share what they read with friends using “shelves” on their Copper profile pages.

“Books are a word-of-mouth industry,” Trowbridge said. “We want this to be the easiest place to find those meaningful recommendations from authors and readers you admire, trust, and share interests with.”

Copper isn’t the first company to try to socialize the online book reading experience. One of the best known is Goodreads, an Amazon-owned website where users can create reading lists and write book reviews. But Trowbridge notes that, unlike Copper, Goodreads focuses solely on the reader and doesn’t bring the author into the equation.

As of last week, Copper had a waiting list of around 6,500 potential users, including 3,000 published authors, according to Trowbridge. Some of them are potential Android users who can’t join the app yet, although Copper plans to launch on Android in the coming months.

The nine-employee startup raised $2.5 million last year in a pre-seed round led by San Francisco-based venture capital firm Wave Capital. Other investors include former Twitter employee Claire Diaz-Ortiz, Paypal CEO Dan Schulman, and Fran Hauser, the former head of digital at Time Inc., who now sits on Copper’s board. Popular science writer Adam Grant is also an investor, advisor and app user.

Copper is free for fans and authors, though the company plans to eventually roll out a premium version with additional features for paying members. Ultimately, Trowbridge said she could foresee publishers paying Copper to promote their books through the app. For now, the startup is focused on building the user base, she said.

“It’s such a tough industry to break into, especially if you’re a budding author,” Trowbridge noted. “I wanted to create a place where if you dream of writing a book, this is where you can meet, build your community, find your agent [and] get encouragement and advice.

MAYA BANK hopes that at least one million of PayMaya Philippines’ 47 million customers will leverage its services after the e-wallet is rebranded for the launch of the digital lender.

About six months after PayMaya was granted a digital banking license by Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), Maya Bank was launched on Friday evening alongside the rebranding of the PayMaya platform to Maya to include online banking services.

Prior to Maya Bank’s launch, PayMaya had over 47 million users in March.

“I really want a million [of PayMaya’s users] love the product. I think that’s something we’re really going to pursue this year,” Maya Bank Angelo Madrid said during a press conference in Makati on Friday night during the launch event.

Along with the app’s new look and inclusion of digital banking alongside e-wallet, cryptocurrency trading and micro-investments that were already available through PayMaya, the Maya branding will apply across the board. of the PayMaya ecosystem. PayMaya Business will now be Maya Business, while Smart Padala agents will become Maya Center’s field network.

“Over the past few years, PayMaya has evolved to adapt to the ever-changing market needs of consumers and businesses. We are leapfrogging with a new experience by building the country’s all-in-one money platform under Maya,” said Shailesh Baidwan, Chairman of PayMaya and Co-Founder and Board Director of Maya Bank.

Among Maya Bank’s initial products is Maya Credit, which will have a ceiling of 15,000 pesos for customers, Madrid said.

“What’s good about lending [product] is that it is instantaneous. You will only have to go through the verification process. It’s something you can put in your wallet, which you can use for bill payments,” he said.

Maya Credit is for general-purpose lending, Madrid said. He added that they are looking to manufacture speciIfc lending products, such as buy now, pay later, as they gather more information about their users’ needs.

The digital bank also wants to meet the credit needs of small businesses, Madrid said.

“We want to accelerate the success of our merchants and small businesses so they can… make us their partner in growing their businesses,” he said.

Meanwhile, the digital bank savings account offering called Maya Savings will offhad an initial deposit rate of 6% per annum, the highest in the market to date.

Users can also buy, sell and hold cryptocurrencies from P1 through the app’s Maya Crypto feature. Mr. Baidwan said they hoped it could help Filipinos discover and test their appetite for cryptocurrencies.

“We introduced it in an instant, intuitive way and they can log in with low balances. What we want is for people to start saving, to invest, but we also want to make sure that they do with some [crypto]currencies, and they do it in a way that they can do it with very small amounts,” Baidwan said.

Meanwhile, PayMaya’s e-wallet and bill payment features are now under Maya Wallet.

Voyager Innovations, Inc., owner of PayMaya and Maya Bank, in April raised an additional $210 million in its latest funding round to fund the launch of its digital lender.

Maya Bank is one of six entities that have been granted digital banking licenses by the BSP. The central bank has imposed a moratorium on the granting of online banking authorizations because it wants to ensure healthy competition between new players and monitor their development.

Digital banks, which offer their services through online platforms and are not required to set up physical branches, should help the BSP achieve its twin goals of ensuring that 50% of retail payments are made digitally and that 70% of adult Filipinos do part of the formal network. The Beach Check app is free and easy to use. Downloadable from Google Play or the Apple App Store, it allows users to check individual beaches or view a map showing red (populated), orange (less crowded) and green (uncrowded) beaches.

Containing no in-app purchases, the handy little program for your mobile has registered 72,789 downloads so far.

The traffic light system uses sophisticated technology and authorized users on the ground who color-code beaches based on the number of visitors and parking spaces, aiming to reduce overcrowding in popular coastal areas and encourage the distancing.

Although national Covid restrictions have now been fully lifted, it is likely that holidaymakers will seek to avoid crowded places in the future due to the many benefits, both human and environmental, of quieter outdoor spaces. More space on the beach allows people and wildlife to thrive.

Beach Yoga Festival, June 17-19

With over 70 yoga classes throughout the weekend, Beach Yoga Fest is suitable for both beginners and experienced yoga practitioners. The first beach yoga festival in the UK, 2022 will be the third year the event has taken place on Bournemouth beach.

As well as yoga on the beach, there’s a program of water sports and aerial yoga, plus a range of free therapies, guest speakers, gong baths and sound treatments. Tickets start from £18.70 per person.

Bourne Free: Pride on the Park 2022, July 8-9

2022 will be the first time in years that the annual Bournemouth Pride weekend will take place at Meyrick Park, meaning the event will be bigger, better and more accessible than ever. Bourne Free will have a green theme and the festival’s green adaptations include eliminating single-use plastic and offsetting the carbon it produces.

Expect parades, fairground rides, food and drink stalls and a new sensory space. Admission to Bourne Free Family Night on Fridays is free. Saturday tickets cost from £17.50 for adults and £5 per child and free for those under 14.

Cheese and chilli festival, May 28 and 29

After a two-year hiatus, the Cheese and Chilli Festival returns to Christchurch in 2022. Now in its eighth year, the family-friendly (and dog-friendly) two-day festival offers an array of activities for cheese lovers and chilli.

Try a selection of regional cheeses, chat with the producers, attend a masterclass given by a local cheese expert or participate in chili tasting contests, hot food challenges or chili sauce contests.

Other activities include a beer festival, live music, children’s entertainment, crazy golf and craft stalls. For those wishing to stay overnight, camping is available at £20 per pitch per night.

Festival tickets cost from £7 per adult and are free for those under 16.

Christchurch Food Festival, June 2-5

This year, the Christchurch Food Festival returns to Christchurch Quay for an extended, free four-day celebration over the Platinum Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend.

Highcliffe Food & Arts Festival, June 11-12

This free celebration of local arts and crafts showcases regional food and drink as well as arts and crafts.

The Highcliffe Food & Arts Festival takes place throughout the center of the village and there will be two music stages and a cookery theater featuring celebrity chefs Jean-Christophe Novelli and Lesley Waters from Dorset, as well as Alex Aitken and the Christchurch Harbor Hotel and Jetty Restaurant team and Christchurch-born James Golding, Chief Executive of the Pig Group of Hotels.

The little ones can enjoy craft workshops, a treasure hunt and a “Grow Your Own” tent.

Poole Old Lifeboat Station Museum

Located next to Fisherman’s Dock in Poole Quay, Poole’s Old Lifeboat Station museum has reopened to visitors after extensive refurbishment. Historic sights to discover include Poole’s first motorized lifeboat and new displays of bravery from the crew.

The central display is the Thomas Kirk Wright, one of Poole’s historic lifeboats which dates from 1939 and was the first ‘small ship’ of the lifeboat flotilla at Dunkirk during the Second World War. The museum is free and open every day.

Poole Seafood Festival, June 3-5

Visit the Poole Seafood Festival for three days of local seafood, produce and live music over the Platinum Jubilee weekend.
